Whole Brain Thinking and Balance PDF Print E-mail
Written by Dean Brittenham

Balance the Brain and You Can Better Balance the Body.

The most successful students and the most successful people have great balance between the two sides of the body and the two sides of the brain.

Who is going to do the most important job in developing the TOTAL STUDENT? It will mainly fall on the shoulders of the exceptional Physical Education teachers and coaches and Classroom teachers. The majority of education in school is developing the left side of the Brain. But the HIGH ACHIEVERS in school and in life are the WHOLE BRAIN THINKERS who do a great job in developing both sides of the brain, the Corpus Collousum and the CONNECTIONS between the three major parts of the brain.

The schools that are doing a great job of growing their students' brains are those that take a short 3-5 minute break from academic subject material and have their students juggle, use the bricks, perform cross-crawl movements, march in place, draw figure 8's in the air, jog in place, and many other activities to activate the Right Hemisphere. Parents and Educators have the GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY and the responsibility to develop students into Whole Brain Thinkers. Most all the geniuses, inventors, composers, scientist, writers, great ATHLETE performers are or were Whole Brain Thinkers. Why is it critical to develop the Right Brain?  Because this is where the ability to become a genius lies. Gelb and Buzan state that everyone has the potential to be a genius. They state that we do not develop 1/100 of 1 percent of the brains POTENTIAL

The right brain houses critical abilities: Creativity, Focus, Awareness, IMAGINATION (WHICH Einstien said is more important than KNOWLEDGE), Subconscious Function, Rhythm, Balance, etc. These Right Brain functions can be developed by incorporating activities that promote making new and thousands of CONNECTIONS which result in building New Mental Maps and Motor Maps. Physical Education Athletics are the major programs to enable the students to make Connections in the Brain, Nervous System, Muscular System, Circulation System, Respiratory System, and the various organs. With our programs, activities, drills, and exercises, our students are continually making new CONNECTIONS. It is UNLIMITED as to how many connections that this Amazing Machine can make. It is estimated that the human has the potential to make more Connections than there are STREET CORNERS IN THE ENTIRE WORLD.

The easiest and best way to make Connections – especially in the Right Brain is to do things with the opposite hand or foot, do things backwards or opposite, in a circle or a figure-eight, and NO ONE become AMBIDEXTROUS. Again, most of all the Geniuses, great Performers in all areas, were or are Ambidextrous and Whole Brain Thinkers.

In our Physical Education classes we need to teach ambidextrous activities. Number one is JUGGLING, it does a great job in developing Right Brain cell connections. Bob Fox’s cup stacking is essential, washers, bricks, ball roll Demo ball roll. Teach Ben and James the progressions of teaching Juggling. Then have everyone learn to do the bricks. Then washers. Then a little on balance and the Bosu.

There is not a week that goes by that there is not another book by a leading Neuroscientist, Cognitive Researcher, or Neuroplastician stating that doing a multitude of physical activities, mental gymnastics, fine motor skills, and hand and finger drills grows the Brain, especially the Right Hemisphere.

“A Whole New Mind” by Daniel H. Pink
Why Right – Brainers Will Rule the Future. Japan has lead the world in Math and Science scores, but now they are remaking their vaunted education system to include what the rest of the world is down grading - music, art, play, or sports.

“Lessons Learned from the Art Of Juggling” by Michael Gelb & Tony Buzan
Man has practically unlimited Potential. We only use or develop 1/100 of 1 percent of the brain's potential. Everyone has the potential to be a genius. Juggling fosters the rhythmic coordination between the two sides of the body and the two sides of the brain. Regular juggling builds PSYCHOPHYSICAL AMBIDEXTERITY!

“Spark” by John J Ratey M. D.
The revolutionary new science of exercise and the brain. There is not a week that goes by where there’s not another study that shows neurogenesis  (brain growth) is caused by exercise and Complex Motor Movements.  Perfecting and improving your warm-up drills, speed drills, movement drills, conditioning drills all continue to grow your brain with the result becoming a Whole Brain Thinker.

“WHOLE BRAIN POWER" by Michael J. Lavery
Developing Whole Brain Power is about activating both hemispheres of the brain and harnessing the combined power in a way usually associated with great geniuses in history and athletics. The development of whole brainpower through Ambidexterity Training ensures Neurogenesis, myelination and increased blood flow which leads to improved: creativity, fine motor skills, athletic skills in all sports, memory, muscle density, imagination, intuition, rhythm, balance, relaxed concentration, subconscious functioning and so much more.

“Quantum Leap THINKING” by James J Mapes
Major breakthroughs in Science, Medicine, Learning have come from someone simply Believing that a new Idea has Validity. Quantum Leap Thinking is based on these skills: Continuous Learning, Creative Thinking, and Managing Change.
